"We will continue to address what we believe to be the two most pressing problems on the continent of Africa:
STARVATION and AIDS."

By Dr. Bruce N. Alick, Editor

"The civil strife in Liberia is perpetuated by 'factions and individuals who offer no discernible ideological, political, social, or economic agenda for Liberia. The infrastructure of the country has been destroyed and life in Liberia has been stripped of all normalcy".

The above quotation was part of a statement issued by the Rev. Joan Brown-Campbell during her term as General Secretary of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. These words, which appeared in the March/April 1996 issue of the Mission Herald, could have been written today.

Liberia is still in crisis. Civil war rages throughout the country and rebels have besieged the capital city of Monrovia in an effort to overthrow the government of President Charles G. Taylor. As of this writing, Taylor has promised to step down from power but it is not yet certain whether or not he will leave the country.

CNN has published a "fact sheet" on its website (www.cnn.com) which states that, "violence and tension have gripped the country since Samuel Doe seized power in a 1980 coup that left President William Tolbert dead. Doe, an ethnic Krahn, was the country's first leader not descended from the freed American and West Indian slaves who founded the West African country in the early 19th century.

The Foreign Mission Board Receives First Vehicle Donation!
The Management Team will continue to serve until such time as a new Executive Secretary is named.
The Board assures the Convention and our workers on the field that there will be no interruption in service, nor will there be any break in our financial commitment to our missionaries and our mission stations. We reaffirm our commitment to VISA and to doing missions in new and challenging ways. We will continue to address what we believe to be the two most pressing problems on the continent of Africa: starvation and AIDS. This we will do as we continue to spread the good news about our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ.
Mrs. Sharon White of Amityville, New York is the first member of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc. to donate a vehicle for the benefit of The Foreign Mission Board.
Mrs. White is a retiree of the Telecommunication industry, where she has worked for 31 years. They both attend the Emanuel Baptist Church in Elmont, NY where their Pastor is Rev. H. David Parker. We are truly grateful to Sister White for being the first of many to donate her vehicle to benefit the critical work of missions.

Our Mission

Whereas it becomes necessary and is our duty to extend our Christian influence to advance the kingdom of Christ, and, as African missions claims our most profound attention, and feeling that we are most sacredly called to do work in this field and elsewhere abroad, therefore, we the representatives from the various churches, Sunday schools and societies of the Baptist denominations in the United States, do solemnly organize ourselves in a convention for the above named objects.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,"

Matthew 28:19

Our missionaries today are going as Jesus did, preaching, teaching, and healing. They preach in the churches that they help build. They teach in the schools that they help build, and they pray with the doctors and nurses to bring about healing in the hospitals they help build. It is your continued support that makes this possible. Thank God for our missionaries, and blessed are those who support them in their work, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
